Citrix DaaS can manage local or cloud resources. DaaS cannot be simply understood to mean that all desktops must be moved to the public cloud. The comparison focuses on control management, resource locations, networks, and the day-to-day tasks undertaken by the organization.

Who this is for:General readers and small teams who are working on Citrix DaaS and need to solve the specific problem in the title. Data verification date: 2026-10-26.

First, identify the product line

The official overview of Citrix DaaS positions it for desktop and application virtualization, and resources can be located on-premises or in the public cloud. Readers should distinguish between the control components managed by the service provider and the resource locations that host desktops and applications; purchasing a managed service does not mean that all underlying resource charges are included.

Compare administrative locations to desktop resource locations

Organizations with existing data centers should take stock of which applications cannot be moved and which users require remote access before evaluating a hybrid approach. Separating the location of resources from the control services tells you where the data is running and what parts will be affected by a network outage.

Local VDI usually describes the organization running virtual desktops in its own environment; Citrix DaaS requires further confirmation of how management services and resource locations are arranged. The two cannot be divided into two categories: whether the desktop runs locally or on the cloud, because the management layer and the bearer layer can be located in different locations. First map out the existing identities, images, networks, desktops, and applications, and then see who is responsible for each part of the target solution.

When an organization switches to management services, it does not mean that every business data must be immediately moved to the public cloud, nor does it mean that all the management work of the original local environment will automatically disappear. Resource connections, identities, patches, disaster recovery and support boundaries need to be confirmed. What is compared here is the delivery and responsibility model and does not borrow from other vendor IDV, VOI or TCI routes to illustrate Citrix's actual product support.

Check each requirement for your task

  1. Take inventory of existing VDI identities, images, resources, and support responsibilities.
  2. Indicate the target DaaS management service and actual resource location.
  3. Verify connectivity, data, and recovery against the same business tasks before evaluating migration.

Migration assessment first retains original work capabilities

Use the application list, user working methods and necessary data as the basis for migration, and do not use console demonstrations to replace business acceptance. After the target environment can be accessed, the tasks, fault support and cost components of ordinary users must also be checked; the switching plan should consider data synchronization and rollback conditions. Without measurements and full range, there is no claim that cloud is necessarily faster or on-premises is cheaper.

Where the conclusion applies and what to do next

Citrix clients, Citrix DaaS subscriptions, underlying cloud resources, and Windows application licensing are not the same cost item.
